As I go from one grade to the next, I am learning new words. If I come across a word that I do not know, I look it up and post it on this web site. These are fun new words that I am now able to use to help me communicate. I have also included a sentence for each word.
coaxing - to persuade gradually or by flattery to do something.
The employees needed daily coaxing to do a good job.
sadist - deliberate cruelty.
The bully was sadistic towards the boy he picked on daily.
rigid- unable to bend or be flexed out of shape; not flexible.
We could not mold the plastic because it was very rigid.
supine - lying face upward.
The boy watched the starts as he laid supine.
wraithlike- a ghost or ghostlike image.
The woman look wraithlike after being hospitalized for a year.
placidly - not easily upset or excited.
We placidly strolled down the street while we watched the people.
morass- an area of muddy or boggy ground.
There is a lot of wild life in morass regions.
monolith - a large single upright block of stone.
He sculpted a great statue out of the monolith.
sonorous- capable of producing a deep ringing sound.
The large bell was sonorous and could be heard for blocks.
propitious- giving or indicating a good chance of success.
It is not a propitious time for buying a house.
ominous - giving the impression that something bad or unpleasant is going to happen.
The sky was ominous just before the tornado struck.
abject - extremely bad, unpleasant and degrading.
The accident left him in an abject state.
acute - present or experienced to a severe degree.
The doctor told him that his condition was acute.
deluge - a severe flood, or to inundate with a great quantity.
The deluge of rain caused a lot of flooding.
envelop - wrap up, cover or surround.
The mom enveloped the baby in a blanket.
foible - a minor weakness in someone's character.
A friend can look past your foible.
futile - incapable of producing any useful results. Pointless.
It is futile to argue with his mother.
mollify - appease the anger or anxiety of someone.
The clerk tried to mollify the customer by giving him a discount.
recluse - a person who lives a solitary life.
He is a recluse and dose not talk to anyone.
subtle - so delicate or precise as to be difficult to analyze or describe.
The boss spoke to the employee is a subtle way.
tawdry - showy but cheap and of poor quality.
The movie was tawdry and did not have a good message.
acrid- having an irritatingly strong and unpleasant taste or smell.
There was an acrid fume in the auto repair shop. pact- A formal agreement.
After ten years of war the two nations finally had a pact.
degrade- treat or regard someone with disrespect.
A teacher should never degrade a student for not knowing the right answer.
remit- to send or pay.
Every month my parents remit their water bill to the city of Chicago.
concise- brief, to the point.
The student's report was concise and he received an A+.
akin- similar or compatible.
Even though the two brothers didn't look the same they were akin in every single way.
profuse- plentiful, abundant.
The animals had a profuse amount of food stored for the winter.
lenient- merciful or tolerant.
The cop was very lenient with the man who was speeding.
scorn- to belittle or sneer at.
After I broke the window my mother felt the need to scorn me.
